Commuter room in Copenhagen, a weekday room for rent

Do you live in Aarhus, Odense, or Roskilde and commute to Copenhagen 3-4 days a week? A commuter room (pendlerværelse) in Copenhagen is the smartest alternative to a hotel, AirBnB, or a long train trip every day. You get your own room in an apartment, pay only for the days you use it, and avoid the practical hassle of moving your whole life to the capital.

What is a commuter room?

A commuter room is a weekday rental, typically Monday evening to Thursday evening, in an apartment where the landlord also lives (or has a spare room). You:

  • Use the room 3-4 days a week, not weekends
  • Pay lower monthly rent than for a full-time room in the same neighborhood
  • Typically get a furnished room with bed, desk, and storage. You don't need to move furniture.
  • Share kitchen, bathroom, and common areas with the landlord or other roommates

It's popular among consultants, lawyers, IT professionals, and people on short-term projects in the capital.

What does it cost?

There isn't a public price index specifically for commuter rooms. A full-time room in Indre By averaged DKK 7,186/mo in 2025 (KBH-Bolig), so a weekday rental (3-4 days/week) typically sits noticeably lower depending on neighborhood and number of nights. Check current listings for a realistic price.

For comparison to short-term alternatives: a hotel in the center costs many times more across a typical work week, and even a monthly-rented AirBnB is typically substantially pricier than finding a private landlord.

  2. Facebook groups like "Pendlerværelse København", "Hverdagsværelse Storkøbenhavn", and "Værelse til pendler". Lots of supply, but also scams. Always ask to see the apartment before paying.
  3. LinkedIn, surprisingly effective. Post to your network: "Looking for a commuter room in CPH, 3 nights/week from September." Many find via a friend-of-a-friend system.
  4. Boligportal and specialized platforms like Bedwise (where available).

What to know as a commuter

  • Tax (commute deduction). You can deduct travel expenses if you commute over 24 km each way between home and work (SKAT, 2025). A commuter room doesn't change that. You still count from your registered home. The 2025 rate is DKK 3.81/km for the first 20,000 km/year.
  • CPR address. You should NOT change your CPR address as long as you keep your primary residence elsewhere.
  • Insurance. Check your home insurance. Some policies cover your belongings at a secondary address.
  • Transport. A commuter card (DSB Orange Fri or Rejsekort) saves you substantially on train fares if you commute multiple times a week.
