Roommates and rooms in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is Denmark's most active market for shared housing. With over 667,000 inhabitants (Statistics Denmark, 1 January 2025) and Denmark's largest university (University of Copenhagen with around 40,000 students), a good roommate isn't a luxury. It's the foundation for a good life in the city.

What does a room in shared housing cost?

Neighborhoods: where do you fit?

Nørrebro

Multicultural, young, well-connected via metro. Jægersborggade, Folkets Park, and an endless list of cafés and bakeries. Popular with students, creatives, and people who want to be in the middle of things without paying Indre By prices.

Vesterbro

Café-dense, design-heavy, slightly more grown-up than Nørrebro but still hip. Close to the central station. Popular with freelancers, media people, and entrepreneurs.

Frederiksberg

Green, calm, "grown-up cool." Large trees, beautiful villas, and a mixed population. A bit pricier, but worth it if you prefer quiet over café noise. Popular with PhD students, doctors, and families.

Østerbro

The Lakes, Fælledparken, Trianglen. A more "established" atmosphere, with lots of young families, but also a solid pocket of young professionals. Good S-train connections. Read our guide to renting a room in Østerbro.

Christianshavn

Canals, Reffen street food, the Opera House nearby. Cozy and a little isolated from the rest of the city. Limited supply. Rooms go fast.

Amager

Islands Brygge in summer, the harbour bath, short metro ride to the center. The fast-growing neighborhood. Cheaper than the inner districts, with lots of newer apartments.

Where to look

  1. ROO:ME: verified profiles, lifestyle matching, focused on Copenhagen. Free.
  2. Facebook groups like "Roomies København" or "Værelse til leje København." Big supply, but also scams. Never transfer a deposit before seeing the flat.
  3. University notice boards and internal groups (KU, CBS, RUC, ITU). Many students post there first.
  4. DBA / Den Blå Avis: no longer the biggest, but still useful for rooms outside central Copenhagen.
